Install Mekanism Core & Verify Osmium Generation
Setting up Hard Dependencies & Overworld Ore Spawns
Install the base Mekanism mod plus Mekanism Tools. Tools will not finish loading without the core machine mod. Bronze, Steel, Glowstone, and Refined Obsidian all come from those machines. Official builds target Forge and NeoForge.
After the first Overworld chunks generate, confirm Osmium Ore is actually in the world. It is a pale blue vein in stone and deepslate and is the one new metal you mine with a vanilla Iron pick. If a custom worldgen pack deleted it, every later Osmium, Glowstone, and Refined Obsidian recipe is dead. Do not start a Bronze rush until you have seen at least one osmium vein. That single check saves a wasted Infuser setup.
Machine order that actually matters: a power source (Heat Generator is enough), then Enrichment Chamber, then Metallurgic Infuser. The Infuser is the real gate. Bronze wants Enriched Tin on Copper. Steel wants Carbon on Iron, twice. You can wear Osmium before any of that, but you cannot skip the Infuser if you want Steel or the later refined metals.
Write the chain on a sign so JEI is not a ritual. Bronze: Enrich Tin → Infuser onto Copper → dust → furnace. Steel: Carbon onto Iron → Enriched Iron → Carbon again → Steel Dust → furnace. Glowstone and Obsidian ingots: Osmium Compressor plus liquid Osmium. Obsidian adds an Infuser step first (enriched diamond onto obsidian dust). If the Compressor starves, you are short on osmium, not short on glowstone.
Early-Game Strategy: Lapis Lazuli vs Bronze Rush
Balancing High Enchantability vs Workhorse Mining Durability
Day one has two honest options, and they are not “Lapis versus Bronze” as a power ranking. Lapis tools cost nothing but gems and a table. Official speed is 9.0. Faster than Iron 6.0 and even Diamond 8.0. With enchantability 32 (Gold tools sit at 22). Durability is 128. That combination is a disposable Fortune / Silk platform, not a career pickaxe.
Bronze is the first machine alloy worth a full set. Enrich Tin, push Copper through the Metallurgic Infuser, smelt the dust. Harvest level 2 (Iron), 375 uses, speed 7.0, sword damage 6. The same tooltip as vanilla Iron, not “above Iron 5”. You take Bronze because it is faster than Iron and you never have to find a second iron vein for tools. Craft the pickaxe first. Hold the paxel until you can afford to throw a full tool set into one item.

Craft Your First Paxel (The 3-in-1 Multi-Tool)
Freeing 2 Hotbar Slots with 2x Base Material Durability
A Paxel is Pickaxe + Axe + Shovel in one slot, with 2× the material’s tool durability. That is code, not marketing: getPaxelMaxUses() = 2 * getUses(). Iron 250 becomes 500. Bronze 375 becomes 750. Steel 500 becomes 1,000. Obsidian 4,096 becomes 8,192. Secondary uses stay on: strip a log, flatten a path, drown a campfire. Those extras are useful in a cave and clumsy on a build site, so keep a separate Fortune pick if you place blocks all afternoon. Silk lives on the paxel.
The first paxel that is actually cheap is Iron. You already have the three iron tools. The first paxel that lasts a whole mining trip is Osmium. Ore, furnace, done, no Infuser. Skip the Lapis paxel: six tools for 256 uses. Steel is the exception on handles: the steel paxel wants Iron Ingots in the handle slots, not sticks. Every other paxel in this guide uses sticks.

The 6 Custom Material Tiers in Mekanism Tools
Deep Analysis of Metallurgy, Tool Speeds, and Armor Mechanics
Read the six tiers as a route, not a museum. The line that wastes the fewest ingots in a normal pack is: Iron Paxel → Bronze tools while the Infuser spins → Osmium armor if you want toughness before the Nether → Steel the moment you have spare coal → Glowstone pick only → Refined Obsidian last. You can skip Lapis entirely. You can skip Osmium tools and still wear the armor. You should skip Glowstone swords.
Production cost is the hidden stat. Lapis is mined. Osmium is mined and smelted. Bronze and Steel consume Infuser time. Glowstone and Refined Obsidian both eat liquid Osmium in the Osmium Compressor. Which means every Glowstone pick you craft is an Obsidian ingot you delayed. That trade is why “use every tier” is bad advice.
1. Lapis Lazuli Tier (The Enchanter's Secret Weapon)
No machines. Raw Lapis gems on a Crafting Table. Official numbers: 128 uses, harvest level 1 (Stone), speed 9.0, sword damage 5, enchantability 32. Gold is 22, not 25. Lapis still wins the table. Armor is only 9 defense with 0 toughness. Treat it as a cheap stick you throw at the enchanting table. Roll Fortune III or Silk Touch, use the tool until it dies, and do not repair it. A full Lapis armor set is a costume.

Two tabs on the grid. Sword is two gems over a stick. Tooltip 5 damage, that is all. Paxel tab is axe + pick + shovel + two sticks; the icons are the official Lapis tools, not a recycled sword sprite. 256 uses on that paxel. Craft it only if you insist on one hotbar slot before Iron.
2. Bronze Tier (The Early-Game Workhorse)
First alloy that behaves like a real iron replacement. Enrich Tin, infuse Copper, smelt Bronze Dust. Tools: 375 uses, level 2, speed 7.0 (Iron is 6.0), sword 6. Armor: 18 defense, 1.0 toughness. A step above Iron’s 15 / 0. Enchantability 10 is average; do not pick Bronze because you want god rolls. Pick it because copper and tin show up while you are already building the Infuser, and because a Bronze Paxel at 750 uses covers the entire mid-overworld without a second iron toolkit.

Pickaxe tab: three bronze ingots over two sticks, vanilla shape. Sword tab: two ingots over a stick, tooltip 6. Same as Iron, faster mine at 7.0. The Bronze paxel is in the Paxel chapter below.
3. Steel Tier (The Zero-Diamond Diamond Clone)
Steel is Diamond you cook at home. Infuse Iron with Carbon (coal or charcoal) to Enriched Iron, infuse again to Steel Dust, smelt. Tools: 500 uses, harvest level 3 (obsidian), speed 8.0, sword 7. Those three combat/mine numbers match Diamond. Armor is 20 / 2.0, also Diamond’s pair. You skip cave diamonds for tools, not for Fortune books. Steel is the first tier where a full set plus a paxel is a rational dump of resources. Remember the paxel handle: iron ingots.

Same vanilla shapes, steel ingots. Sword 7 / pick speed 8.0 / 500 uses. When you get to the Paxel chapter, the steel handle slots are iron ingots, not sticks and not more steel.
4. Osmium Tier (The Overworld Super-Ore)
Osmium is the trap people call a “free Netherite sword.” Mine the ore with Iron, smelt it. Sword damage is 8, same tooltip as Netherite. Durability is 1,024. Armor is 21 defense, 3.0 toughness, 0.1 knockback. Better protection than Diamond before you have seen a bastion. The catch is speed: 4.0, slower than Iron. An Osmium pickaxe as your main digger is a long walk. Wear the armor, carry the sword if you want, and keep mining on Bronze, Steel, or later Glowstone. Save spare ingots for the Compressor. Osmium is also the fluid that makes Glowstone and Obsidian ingots exist.

Pickaxe tab is here so you can see the recipe. Then not live on it. Speed 4.0. Helmet tab is the real craft: five ingots, 330 helmet durability, 3.0 toughness on the material. Fill the rest of the armor the same way you fill vanilla iron.
5. Refined Glowstone Tier (The Laser Drill & Piglin Disguise)
Compress Glowstone with liquid Osmium. Speed is 15.0, the fastest number in the addon. Almost 2× Diamond. Durability is only 384. Sword damage is 6, same as Bronze, not 8. Armor is 20 defense with 0 toughness. One piece is enough for Piglin neutrality, which is the real armor use: a pair of boots, not a full yellow set. Craft a pickaxe or paxel for strip mines. Do not craft the sword. Every ingot you spend here is an Obsidian ingot you postponed.

Pickaxe tab is the craft: three refined glowstone ingots, two sticks, speed 15.0, 384 uses. Sword tab is 6 damage. Look at it so you can close the tab. Do not make it.
6. Refined Obsidian Tier (The Apex God-Tier Equipment)
This is the only set that actually retires Netherite on paper. Chain: Enrich Diamond → infuse Obsidian Dust in the Infuser → Refined Obsidian Dust → Osmium Compressor with liquid Osmium → ingot. Tools: 4,096 uses, level 4, speed 12.0, sword 12 (Netherite is 8). Armor: 31 defense, 5.0 toughness, 0.2 knockback. Items have burnsInFire() = false, so a dropped sword survives lava the way Netherite does. The player still burns. Bring potions. The 50% damage claim is 12 versus 8 on the sword tooltip, not a hidden multiplier.

Sword first if you fight, helmet first if you tank. Both grids are vanilla shapes. 12 damage / 825 helmet durability. After this set exists, stop opening the other tabs in this chapter except to scrap leftovers.

Melee Damage, Tool Durability & Enchantability Comparison Matrix
Sword tooltip damage is 4 + material bonus. Bronze 6 equals Iron, it does not beat a fictional “Iron 5”. Steel 7 equals Diamond. Osmium 8 equals Netherite. Glowstone is 6. Leave it out of a sword argument. Obsidian 12 is the only number that changes a fight. Durability and fireproof-item flags are why you still craft the weaker swords on the way up.
Bronze Sword
Steel Sword
Osmium Sword
Refined ObsidianHow to read the row: Bronze is not an upgrade over Iron in damage. It is an upgrade in speed and in how the ingots are made. Steel is the first column that matches Diamond on the three numbers that matter. Osmium is a Netherite-damage sword you should not pair with an Osmium pick. Obsidian is the only column that changes a boss fight. Glowstone is missing on purpose; putting it here would make people craft the 6-damage sword.

Full Defense, Toughness & Knockback Resistance Matrix
Armor is where Osmium earns its keep and Glowstone does not. Osmium 21 / 3.0 is a pre-Nether tank set you smelt in a furnace. Glowstone 20 / 0.0 is Diamond defense with no toughness. Wear one piece for Piglins. Obsidian 31 / 5.0 is the ceiling. It still does not stop lava ticks on you.
Bronze
Steel
Osmium
Glowstone
Refined ObsidianOsmium wins the "before Nether" column. Glowstone ties Diamond defense and then drops toughness to zero. That is why one piece is a Piglin pass and four pieces is a mistake. Obsidian is the ceiling and still wants a Fire Resistance potion in the next hotbar slot.
Paxels: The 3-in-1 Multi-Tool Masterclass
Durability Scaling, Universal Block Harvesting & Hotbar Optimization
Paxels combine the functionality of a Pickaxe, Axe, and Shovel into a single inventory slot. In addition to universal block harvesting, Paxels have double (2x) the base material durability and retain full secondary actions (log stripping with right-click, grass path creation, and campfire dousing):
Iron Paxel
Bronze Paxel
Steel Paxel
Refined Obsidian

Four tabs. Iron and Bronze and Obsidian use sticks in the handle. Steel uses two iron ingots. Look at that tab twice. Top row is always Axe, Pick, Shovel of the same material. If the icons do not match, you are looking at an old screenshot.
What a Paxel does not do: it is not a hoe, it is not a sword, it does not till soil. Secondary uses are log strip, dirt path, campfire out. Enchant it like a pickaxe. If the pack blocks the table, anvil the books. Fortune and Silk still need two paxels or a paxel plus a pick. The addon does not invent a new rule there.
Custom Shields & 16-Color Dyeing in Mekanism Tools
Reinforced Blocking Durability & Banner Customization
Shields are the part of this addon nobody needs on day one and everybody notices after a raid. Official durabilities: Bronze 403, Steel 448, Osmium 672, Refined Obsidian 1,680 (vanilla shield is 336). The recipe is a vanilla shield plus six ingots. Dye them if you want; the stats do not care about the color.
Craft an Osmium shield when you already have spare ingots from armor. Craft the Obsidian shield last, with the rest of the set. A Bronze shield is a vanity project. Dye the face if you want; the durability does not change with color.

Four Loadouts That Do Not Waste Ingots
What to wear and what to leave in the barrel
Day 1, no machines. Iron Paxel if you can spare the three tools. Otherwise a Lapis pick only long enough to enchant Fortune, then throw it away. Leather or Iron armor. Do not craft Lapis armor.
Infuser just came online. Bronze pick or Bronze Paxel, Iron or Bronze sword. Start Osmium armor as soon as veins appear. The 3.0 toughness matters more than another Bronze chestplate. Keep coal flowing into Steel; that is your Diamond skip.
First Nether trip. Osmium armor or mixed Osmium + one Glowstone piece for Piglins. Steel or Osmium sword. Mining tool should still be Steel or a Glowstone pick, not Osmium. Fire Resistance potions are still required. Obsidian gear is not ready and would not save you from lava anyway.
Compressor online. Stop making side grades. Refined Obsidian sword, paxel, and full armor. Keep one Glowstone pick in a backup slot if you still strip-mine deepslate by hand. Everything else becomes repair material or a museum piece.
Pro Tips: Enchanting & Anvil Maintenance Economics
Maximizing Lifespans and Enchantment Synergies in Modpacks
Enchant from books. Some packs block Paxels at the table because of multi-tool tags. Anvil books always work: Unbreaking III, Mending, Efficiency V. Fortune and Silk Touch still cannot share a tool. Lapis is the only material where the table itself is the point (enchantability 32).
Repair with one ingot. A damaged Paxel plus a matching ingot on an anvil restores about 25% max durability. You do not craft a second Paxel to keep the first one alive.
