Install Create Mod 6.0
Match the loader to the Minecraft version, then add Flywheel
Create 6.0 runs on two supported pairs: Minecraft 1.21.1 + NeoForge + Create 6.0.10, or Minecraft 1.20.1 + Forge + Create 6.0.8. Install the loader first, then Create, then the matching Flywheel library. A mismatched Flywheel is the usual crash on first launch.
After the world loads, the first craft is Andesite Alloy. Not a train station.
Andesite Alloy (Iron or Zinc)
A 2×2 checker, iron or zinc nuggets
The recipe is a 2×2 checker of andesite with either iron nuggets or zinc nuggets, and each craft gives one Andesite Alloy. You don't need a mixer or brass yet — mine andesite, smash iron or zinc into nuggets, and craft a stack.

Shaft, Cog, Hand Crank
Two alloy make eight shafts; the hand crank is three planks
Two Andesite Alloy stacked vertically give 8 Shafts. A Shaft plus any plank is a shapeless Cogwheel, and a Shaft plus two planks is a Large Cogwheel. The Hand Crank is three planks across the top row and one alloy in the bottom-right of that two-row recipe. The key ingredient is planks, not cogwheels — some guides get that wrong.

Right-click a stripped log while holding alloy
Place a stripped oak, birch, or any stripped log, then right-click it while holding Andesite Alloy — the block becomes Andesite Casing. There's also a matching recipe from stripped wood. If JEI shows no crafting grid for it, that's correct: it isn't made on a table.
Item application. Not a 3×3

Your First Millstone
Cog, casing, stone — hand-cranked
The millstone is a simple column: Cogwheel, Andesite Casing, and any stone block. Power it with a water wheel or a Hand Crank and it grinds wheat, flowers, or cobble into gravel. It's slower than Crushing Wheels, but it's also the machine you can finish in an afternoon. The press is the other half of that build, and sheets unlock the mixer later — you don't need belts yet.

Fan-Wash Gravel When the Cave Is Empty
Mill cobble, blow water across a depot, pocket the nuggets
The first loop that feels like Create is not a train. Mill cobble into gravel. Sit an Encased Fan so it blows through a water source onto a Depot (or a short belt). Washed gravel pays flint and iron nuggets. That is the iron you did not want to branch-mine for another hour. The fan recipe is Shaft / Andesite Casing / Propeller. Propeller waits on iron sheets, so this loop comes after the press, not before.
Keep the line short: mill → depot → fan. One water wheel covers the stress. When you later own Crushing Wheels, the same wash sits under crushed ore. You don't need brass to start washing.
What to Build (and What to Leave)
Machines you can leave uncrafted and still have a working factory
- Leave for later. Trains, stations, tracks, and a steam hall. A train is logistics — it doesn't mill wheat, press sheets, or wash gravel.
- Wait for a press. Iron sheets come from pressing iron ingots, and the whisk, propeller, empty blaze burner, and mixer all need those plates first.
- Craft this afternoon. Alloy, shafts, cogs, casing, millstone, press, water wheel. Add a fan when gravel should pay iron.
- Don't look for a 3×3. Andesite Casing is an item application, Crushing Wheels are a 5×5 mechanical craft, and brass is a heated mix.
Belt, Depot, Basin
Six kelp, a shapeless depot, a five-alloy basin
The Mechanical Belt is two rows of dried kelp (six pieces). The Depot is a shapeless Andesite Alloy plus Andesite Casing. The Basin is five alloy in a ring with the top-middle empty. Belt plus depot gives you a line; the basin waits until you have a press or mixer to sit above it.

Press, Mixer, Fan
Press first. Sheets unlock whisk and propeller.
The Mechanical Press is a column of Shaft, Andesite Casing, and an iron block — no sheets required. Once it's running, press iron ingots into Iron Sheets. The Whisk is two alloy and five sheets; the Mixer is a Cog, Casing, and Whisk; the Propeller is a plus of sheets around one alloy; the Encased Fan is Shaft, Casing, and Propeller.
Order is the whole section: press → sheets → whisk → mixer. Fan after propeller. A mixer with no heat only does cold recipes. Heated brass is the next chapter, not this one.

Power: Wheel Before Steam
Eight planks and a shaft beat a steam engine
The Water Wheel is eight planks around a Shaft, sitting in flowing water — enough power for a millstone, a press, and a short belt. The Windmill Bearing is a column of wooden slab, stone, and Shaft; sail blocks come later. Steam engines and blaze burners are heat infrastructure, not early-game power.

Crushing Wheels Are 5×5
A 5×5 mechanical recipe for two wheels
The 5×5 pattern below (dots are empty) makes the pair:
.AAA. AAPAA APSPA AAPAA .AAA.
A is Andesite Alloy, P is any plank, and S is any stone (the exact stone tag differs slightly between 1.21.1 NeoForge and 1.20.1 Forge). The center is stone and four planks make a plus, with alloy filling the rest except the corners — the result is two Crushing Wheels. This is a Mechanical Crafter recipe, not a crafting-table 3×3.

2Millstone vs Crushing Wheels
Different recipe types for different jobs
A Millstone runs milling recipes: wheat to flour, flowers to dye, cobble to gravel. It is one block, one 3×3, cheap enough to hand-crank. Crushing Wheels run crushing recipes: raw ore to crushed ore plus byproducts. They cost a Mechanical Crafter wall and two wheels that must face each other.
Place the pair one block apart, stacked vertically, and spin them into each other. Drop input from above and catch output in a Basin or on a belt below. If only one wheel turns, or both turn the same way, nothing crushes. Build the millstone first; build the pair when you're tired of smelting raw ore one stack at a time.
Brass Waits for Heat
Mixer plus a captured Blaze
Empty Blaze Burner is four Iron Sheets around netherrack. Catch a Blaze with the empty burner, then sit a Mechanical Mixer on a Basin above that heat. Brass is copper plus zinc in that heated mixer — not a 3×3 and not a furnace recipe. Superheat later with Blaze Cake if a recipe asks for it. Until the burner is lit, brass machines (brass casing, smart chute, precision mechanisms) are just screenshots.

Mechanical MixerFour Setups That Work
What to build after the first river, the first press, and the first blaze
First afternoon. Alloy stack, eight shafts, cogs, one casing, millstone, press. A water wheel if the river is next door, a hand crank if it isn't. Grind wheat and press a few iron sheets — leave the train platform for later.
River factory. Water wheel, short belt, depot, press. Sheets exist. Whisk and mixer wait until you have five plates to spare.
Crushing hall. Mechanical crafter wall, one 5×5, two wheels, a basin underneath. Wash crushed ore after the fan exists.
Brass floor. Empty burner, one Blaze, mixer on basin, then brass casing. Trains after that. Not before.
