Nether Portal Guide
Using Flint and Steel on a Nether Portal
The most common reason players craft Flint and Steel is to open the Nether. Build a valid obsidian frame, leave the inside empty, then use Flint and Steel on the inner edge of the frame. If the frame is correct, the portal blocks appear immediately.
If nothing happens, check the frame before blaming the tool. Missing obsidian corners are allowed on many portal shapes, but the vertical sides and top/bottom edges must still form a valid frame. Water, blocks, or broken obsidian inside the portal space can also stop activation.
Flint and Steel is also useful after you reach the Nether. Ghasts can break portal blocks, and carrying a spare Flint and Steel lets you relight the portal without searching for fire charges or another ignition source.
Fire Safety Tip
Flint and Steel creates fire. Avoid using it near wooden builds, wool, leaves, or other flammable blocks unless you are deliberately testing fire spread or lighting a controlled area.
Flint and Steel FAQ
How do you make Flint and Steel in Minecraft?
Craft Flint and Steel with 1 Iron Ingot and 1 Flint. It is a shapeless recipe, so the two ingredients do not need a specific crafting-grid position.
Where do you get Flint?
Flint most commonly comes from breaking gravel. If gravel drops gravel instead of Flint, keep mining more gravel or use a Fortune-enchanted tool when available.
Can Flint and Steel light a Nether portal?
Yes. Build the obsidian frame first, then use Flint and Steel on the inside of the frame to create the purple portal blocks.
Does Flint and Steel break?
Yes. Flint and Steel has durability and loses durability when used successfully. Unbreaking and Mending can help it last longer.
Why is my Nether portal not lighting?
Check the obsidian frame size, make sure the inside is empty, and use Flint and Steel on an inner obsidian edge. A broken or incomplete frame will not activate.
