Armor Trims introduced pure visual customization to Minecraft armor in 1.20 and 1.21. With 18 unique templates and 10 color materials, there are over 1,800 possible armor combinations!
Where to Find Rare Smithing Templates
- Silence Armor Trim (0.6% chance): Found in Ancient City chests (the rarest trim in the game).
- Bolt & Flow Trims: Found inside 1.21 Trial Chambers and Ominous Vaults.
- Vex Armor Trim: Found in Woodland Mansion chests.
- Spire Armor Trim: Found in End City towers.
- Netherite Upgrade Template: Found in Bastion Remnant chests.
Duplicating Templates
Do not waste your last Smithing Template! You can duplicate any template at a crafting table using 7 Diamonds + 1 Material Block (such as Cobbled Deepslate, Terracotta, or Netherrack depending on the template).
Top Color Combinations
- Netherite Armor + Amethyst Trim (Flow / Silence): Deep purple glowing lines on dark armor.
- Diamond Armor + Quartz Trim (Coast / Eye): Clean ice-blue aesthetic.
- Iron Armor + Redstone Trim (Sentry / Bolt): High-contrast cybernetic look.

Apply an armor trim step by step
- Place the smithing template in the template slot of a smithing table.
- Place the compatible armor piece in the equipment slot.
- Add a trim material such as an ingot, crystal or other supported item.
- Inspect the preview before taking the output. The material changes the trim color, not the armor protection.
Plan a set before spending rare templates
Use one armor material and compare several trim materials against it before committing all four pieces. Low-contrast combinations can disappear at normal gameplay distance. Helmets and boots expose less trim area than chestplates, so judge the full set rather than one enlarged item icon.
Templates are consumed when used. If the version supports template duplication, prepare the required template, diamonds and matching base block before trimming a complete set. Trims are cosmetic and do not add enchantments, toughness or knockback resistance.
